How To Access Mountain Island Trails

To access the trail system, start on the gravel path along the power lines, next to the parking lot entrance. You will come across the Hydro (green flow) and Spillway (blue flow) trails on the right. Continue just passed this trails and exit to the left across the cross walk. Going through the gate starts the mile-ish pedal on the Carolina Thread Trail / Fire road connector to get to the trail system. Continue on this trail for about a mile and you arrive at the Mountain Island Trail system. To your right through the wooden trail entrance are original Mountain Island Trails Boardwalk Loop, Outer Loop, and Inner Loop. To the left across the bridge are newer trails K2, K34, River, Siren, and Skeleton.

Spillway - Blue Flow/Jump Trail

A fast, lappable blue flow trail located right by the main parking lot. It is packed with smooth rollers and jumps that carry your momentum perfectly. It’s an ideal spot to warm up or drill your jumping technique before heading deeper into the park.

Hydro - Green Flow/Adaptive Trail

A green flow trail built to be adaptive-bike friendly. The top half is incredibly smooth, while the lower section introduces small, fully rollable jumps and a confidence-building step-up. It is the perfect training ground for new riders looking to progress toward blue flow lines.

Underpass

A short climb leads to a sizeable wooden drop (~5-8 feet) that brings you to a uniquely awesome wooden roller coaster like section that plunges you below the Carolina Thread Trail before shooting you out the other side. Fun and quick trail that would only be made better by a quick loop back to the top!

K34

Similar to K2 but it's harder brother, this hand cut singletrack that starts with a longer climb to provide the elevation for the fun descents you'll find on this trail. The trail includes smaller jumps, drops, gap jumps, berms, and rollers. Part of the Mountain Island Park Trail system that is accessed after taking the ~mile gravel access road/Carolina Thread Trail to the trail system.

K2

Hand cut singletrack that starts with a climb to provide the elevation for the quick descent. The trail includes smaller jumps, berms, and rollers. Part of the Mountain Island Park Trail system that is accessed after taking the ~mile gravel access road/Carolina Thread Trail to the trail system.

Siren

An advanced, feature-filled trail located at the far end of the system. It combines tough, punchy climbs with technical, side-slope descents that test your overall handling. It has some high-consequence exposure along the river, so pre-ride it before you push your speed.

Skeleton

Skeleton is one of the newest additions to the park. It blends the raw, hand-cut feel of the deeper woods with fresh, progressive features. Expect punchy sections, natural tech, and engaging dirt that adds another solid option to your lap rotation.

Outer Loop and Inner Loop

These intermediate trails feature a bit more elevation. After a quick climb through bermed switchbacks, you get a fast, tree-lined descent packed with rollers, berms, and ladder bridges. They are classic, punchy singletrack loops that keep you on your toes.

Boardwalk Loop

A beginner-friendly green loop that serves as a great introduction to the woods. As the name suggests, it features a few extended wooden boardwalk sections that add some flavor to the ride without requiring advanced bike handling skills.

River Loop

A scenic, mostly flat green cross-country trail that cruises right along the edge of the Catawba River. It features a few skinnies and ladder bridges, serving as the main connecting artery to access the deeper trails like Skeleton and Siren.
